In the second half of the 20th century, swordsmithing almost disappeared as a result of Japan’s defeat in World War II. To prevent this from happening, swords ceased to be used as weapons and became artistic collector’s items. Swordsmithing became a traditional craft, and swords and sets are now produced for enthusiasts and collectors. Swordsmiths continue the traditions of their schools and seek inspiration from the development of the Japanese sword over the past 1,000 years.
