KATANA KOSHIRAE

After the creation of infantry units, it was necessary to arm a large number of soldiers with affordable, practical, and simple equipment (as opposed to the demanding and expensive tachi set).

This led to the creation of the UCHIGATANA KOSHIRAE (approx. 14th-15th century). Tachi sets continued to be used by commanders and officers.

Katana koshirae also evolved, giving rise to many interesting variations. Examples include handachi, tensho, higo, and satsuma koshirae. In my opinion, the tensho koshirae (late 16th century) is a typical example of a simple, functional set. Its refined, unpretentious appearance also set the foundation for other styles of sets in the future.
